Buffleheads

This small diving duck arrives in large numbers in mid-autumn to overwinter. It is
estimated that one quarter of all Buffleheads wintering in B.C. can be found in the
greater Vancouver area. While here, they can be found on virtually any body of
water—estuaries, rivers, lakes, sloughs, the sea and even outdoor swimming pools!
Despite their apparent tameness, Buffleheads (unlike many other duck species) rarely
accept handouts from humans. They dive for small snails, insects and animal larvae
in freshwater habitats, or clams, snails, amphipods and worms in saltwater habitats.
